As a Christian church, we exist to honour God by helping local people worship God, grow spiritually, serve others, and reach their communities and the world with the message and love of Jesus Christ.

Kids' Reading Room

The Kids' Reading Room is a community outreach program to help kids gain confidence in their reading skills as many are behind their grade level, especially after being out of classrooms during COVID.

The idea came from a Facebook post that a sister church (Central Baptist in Sarnia) had developed a Kids Konnection to strengthen reading skills of children in their community. After connecting with them, they shared their blueprint, giving First Baptist a strong starting point for developing our own program. Many children here in Simcoe could benefit from reading to an adult for 30 minutes a week, and be encouraged to read at home at least five times during the week.

If you have a child in Grades 1 to 6 who you feel could benefit from reading out loud to an adult (police check and safety training both completed) who loves the idea of sharing their joy of reading by listening to your child gain confidence for six Tuesdays, please send any questions to kidsreadingroom@gmail.com, and when you're ready, fill out the registration form (see below). The coordinator will let you know they have it and confirm details with you. Cost is $20 cash is to be paid at the first session.

Books are here ready to be read! Your books at home will be needed for your child to keep practicing at home. We provide a fun chart and ideas of different spots or ways in your home to read.

If it is easiest to wait at the church while your child reads, we have a large room right across the hall where you can wait. If you have another child with you, there are things for smaller children to do, or tables for homework an older child might have.
