From Darrell's “Desk”

Darrell's Desk

Where did he go?
I'm all alone.
Just me, the chair, the telephone.
No files of papers everywhere,
no pens or pencils in my care.
No candy dish?
No candy dish!
How could it all have come to this?
No parting song? No parting gifts?
He's done with me. So sad, so sad.
Hold back my tears. I miss that lad!
Alone I am until the day
when someone comes to lead the way.
Who will it be that God will call
to do God's work, for big and small?
Alone I am, still missing him;
His jokes, his laugh. I'm feeling grim.
Although alone, I wish him well
to relax and enjoy what? Time will tell.
Retirement calls. New adventures begin.
May each day forward start with a grin.
